Where are they now?

Over the years thousands of athletes have competed in a Curl-Burke cap.  Some of have won Olympic Gold Medals.  All of have contributed to CUBU's tradition of the Finest Swimming in the Nation's Capital.  In return, they have received life lessons that had have helped them have success later in life.

We start a new series catching up with some of the extraordinary individuals who have swum for Curl Burke.  For our first profile, we visit with Rich Roll who swam for Curl, Edgemoor, Landon and Stanford.  Please return to our website for other profiles which will occur on an irregular basis.

Rich Roll joined the then Curl Swim Club as an age grouper.  He was one of the hardest working swimmers of his generation, regularly winning attendance awards.  His work ethic led him to a very successful swimming career at Stanford in the late 1980s. Rich qualiified for Olympic trials.

Twenty years later Rich once again exhibits the same self discipline and extraordinary work ethic (and careful nutruition) that led him to success at Curl, Edgemoor and Stanford.  Men's Fitness Magainze named Rich one of the "25 Fittest Guys in the World." Rich is an elite-level amateur ultra-distance endurance athlete

The ultra-distance events in which Rich competes are 3-day / 320 mile double-ironman distance triathlons.  On Day 1, the athletes complete a 6.2 mile ocean swim and a 90 mile cross-country cycling race.  Day 2 requires  a 170 mile cycling race.  And the event culminates on Day 3 with a double marathon run (52 miles)

In 2008, Rich finished 11th overall. He clocked the 2nd fastest swim split and was the 3rd fastest American. In the 2009 25th Anniversary Ultraman World Championships, Rich finished the swim with the fastest time (and 6th fastest of all time) and was winning by 10 minutes after the 90 mile bike ride. Despite a bike crash on Day 2 that left him with an injured knee and immobile left shoulder, Rich completed the double marathon in 7:51 on day three for a 6th place with an overall time of 24 hours and 30 minutes.

Speedo Tip of the Week

Stroke Technique for the Big Meet

This week’s Speedo Tip of the Week comes from the July-August 2006 issue of Splash magazine, in which USA Swimming’s Biomechanics Coordinator Russell Mark offers some advice for swimmers heading into their big, end-of-the-season meet. Here are some guidelines.

The Tip:
The big meet is coming up fast. For most swimmers, the end of the season is a time of excitement, mental preparation, taper practices… and worrying about their stroke technique?!?
