Welcome to CUBU at Claude Moore

Dear Loudoun County Swimming Families,

Welcome to Curl-Burke Swim Club at the new Claude Moore facility in Sterling, Virginia.

This is our 4th Curl Burke site in Northern Virginia and our goal is to eventually provide a full range of swimming programs in Loudoun County: Age Group through Senior National level competitive swimming, developmental Stroke School, and Learn to Swim group lessons.

Our goal is to accommodate as many swimmers as we can taking into account the Loudoun County School schedule and High School Swim Season.  We strongly encourage our swimmers to participate on their High School swim teams; therefore, swimmers will be able to practice with both USS and High School programs.

Now that school is out, Claude Moore swimmers are invited to train Long Course meters in the morning at Westwood Country Club in Vienna, or, Short Course meters drill sessions offered in the afternoon in Reston at no extra cost! This will be an excellent opportunity to get to know other Curl-Burke swimmers.  In the future we will offer summer training in Loudoun County at Claude Moore as our program grows.

Swimmers who register by June 15 for our 2007-2008 session will be eligible for a discount.  Families who refer swimmers that sign up with Curl-Burke for the upcoming season will be eligible for an additional discount.  USS Registration and meet entry fees are INCLUDED in our dues.  There are no booster or parent fees.

If you have questions, please contact Coach Marilyn Mangels at 703-860-9157.

We look forward to many new faces at our Claude Moore site as we strive to continue “A Rich Tradition of Inspiring Excellence”, in providing opportunities for swimmers in Loudoun County.

Speedo Tip of the Week

Butterfly Arm Recovery

This week's Speedo Tip of the Week comes from USA Swimming's Biomechanics Coordinator Russell Mark. Mark offers some advice on proper butterfly arm recovery.

The Tip:
The arm recovery should be a relaxed motion, but many swimmers muscle their arms forward instead. Forcing the arms forward will make the back and shoulder muscles very tired.  In order to have a relaxed recovery that will not tire your muscles as quickly, (1) finish your arm stroke strong, (2) have a powerful kick at the finish of the arm stroke, (3) don't lift your body up high when you breathe, and (4) let your arms recover close to the surface of the water.  If you concentrate on all of these technique points, you'll be able to enjoy swimming fly even more. Good luck!
