Welcome to J&MSwim and Curl-Burke Alexandria

During the last 26 years "Kings Dominion" and "The White Water Canyon" are just two of the phrases that have been used to describe us at J&MSwim’s Curl-Burke Alexandria Team. When you read between the lines you can see a program whose philosophy is deeply imbedded in fast swimming while at the same time having fun. We know that it is easy to just give lots of yardage and watch the swimmers go up and down the pool. It is just as easy to coach only the most talented swimmers to greatness. The challenge comes when you have to teach children how to swim correctly, in a fun environment and give them the guidance in life they deserve from their coaches as mentors. No kid likes to go slow and practice drills, yet to “be the best you can be” you have to be patient and learn the FUNdamentals. That’s why J&MSwim is second to none at creating the complete swimmer.

One of the most important factors for you to consider when choosing a swimming program, as far as we are concerned, is the coach on deck. Our staff has over 140 years of swim coaching experience. An even more impressive statistic is the total number of years our staff has been working within the J&MSwim program—over 100 years combined. Having this continuity is essential to our past and continued success of serving our swimmers’ needs.

Our goal is to provide a logically sequential program where your swimmer can grow to what ever level they choose, at their own individual pace. We never want swimming to be the sport that got in the way of doing something else. There needs to be room to accommodate the entire family schedule. In this way, working together as a team, we can help your swimmer stay in the sport through High School and perhaps even into college.

So if you want to be a part of the “Funnest”, Fastest, and most Family Friendly program in Northern Virginia, your search ends with the Curl-Burke Swim Club here in Alexandria.

We’ll see you on deck!

Speedo Tip of the Week

Butterfly Arm Recovery

This week's Speedo Tip of the Week comes from USA Swimming's Biomechanics Coordinator Russell Mark. Mark offers some advice on proper butterfly arm recovery.

The Tip:
The arm recovery should be a relaxed motion, but many swimmers muscle their arms forward instead. Forcing the arms forward will make the back and shoulder muscles very tired.  In order to have a relaxed recovery that will not tire your muscles as quickly, (1) finish your arm stroke strong, (2) have a powerful kick at the finish of the arm stroke, (3) don't lift your body up high when you breathe, and (4) let your arms recover close to the surface of the water.  If you concentrate on all of these technique points, you'll be able to enjoy swimming fly even more. Good luck!
